Chapter 14
âEffie,â Lucan said, âthis is Harriet Payne.â
The old woman stared at Effie for a long moment after Lucanâs proclamation, and Effie took the opportunity to stare back. She was a handsome woman, the hair beneath her kerchief streaked white within the dark, and Effie recognized the resemblance between her and the man called Tavish Cameron, whom she had seen at Henryâs court.
Her brother, with whom she had never spoken.
This was the woman to whom her father had fled the night her mother had been murdered. The night Effie had been cut from her motherâs body.
âCordelia Hargrave?â The old woman looked up at Lucan with confusion and perhaps a bit of suspicion, clear on her lined face.
âItâs true,â Effie answered, drawing Harrietâs attention once more. âThomas Annesley is my father. Is he here or not?â
âButâ¦how is that possible?â Harriet Payne seemed lost as she looked back and forth between Effie and Lucan, and then her eyes went to the crowd beyond the bridge. âAnd who are they?â
âHarriet,â Lucan said quietly. âPerhaps it would be best if we explained everything to you both at once.â He held her gaze, not unkindly, but pointedly.
âPlease donât take him away again, Sir Lucan,â Harriet choked in a whisper. âI couldna bear it. Iâve waited so longâ¦â
Effieâs heart stuttered. He was here.
Lucan reached out and took the old womanâs hand between his own. âOn my honor, mistress. I shall not force Thomas to do anything he doesnât wish to do. Shall I send our friends around to the postern gate for the time being? For you can be sure that they are friends.â
Effie glanced up at Lucan. He considered the group from the Warren his friends now?
âAye,â Harriet said distractedly. âIâll send a maid with food and drink for them.â
Lucan turned as if he would go to them, but Effie laid a hand on his armâshe would never have admitted it aloud, but she couldnât bear the thought of him leaving her in that moment.
âWhere is the gate?â she asked. âIâll tell them.â
Lucan pointed to the eastern side of the hold. âJust there. The back of Roscraig is a point over the bay.
Effie nodded and quickly relayed the information to the group through sign. She then looked back to Harriet.
âIâm ready.â
The older woman stepped back from the door and Effie preceded Lucan into a long central corridor connecting the two towers, a tall, arched opening at the far end with the portcullis raised and the view of the gray firth beyond the long finger of structures beckoned like a peaceful dream. Harriet closed the door behind Lucan and then at once crossed the stones to the stairs curving up the right wall into the East tower.
Effieâs guts felt atremble as she climbed behind the old woman, but Lucan Montagueâs presence at her back encouraged her onward. Her lips, nose, fingertips, toes, felt frozen, but her neck was hot. She shivered.
They came to a wide landing that boasted a doorway on the right, the stair picking up once more at the far end of the floor and disappearing up into the darkness of the tower.
